Our Story
In Greek mythology, Elysium is the ultimate heaven to which immortal heroes are sent. It’s a place of ideal happiness that perfectly epitomizes the heart and purpose of Elysium Acres Horse Sanctuary. We believe the tranquil rolling hills of our more than twenty-six acres of conservation property in Chester, New Hampshire is a slice of heaven. Here is where you can find our senior horses happily and healthily roaming. This serene setting nurtures a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, it provides an oasis for our volunteers, many of whom have selflessly served our communities at home and abroad. These are our heroes: veterans and first responders.

Healing Hearts, One Horse at a Time
Drawing on over three decades of experience in horse rescue, care, and management, Patti Lessard opened Elysium Acres in serene Chester, New Hampshire in early 2024. Since its opening, this high-quality horse sanctuary has provided a peaceful haven for retired mounted police and rescue equines.
Beyond equine welfare, Lessard’s dedication also extends to human well-being thanks to volunteer opportunities. By providing education, physical activity, and social engagement, Elysium Acres offers opportunities to dedicated volunteers. These opportunities enhance the lives of those facing mental health challenges. Therefore, our volunteers develop confidence, respect, and empathy by viewing the world from a horse’s perspective.
